FOMI’s founder (Mother Rose Edkins) was educated in the Haitian town of Jeremie in the 1950-60s. Edkins, the first in her family to receive a formal education, had to leave her family in the village and walk 5 hours to live with distant relatives to enroll for school in the town of Jeremie.
From the first grade and into adulthood, Rose experienced first hand the deprivations of hunger and the difficulties of trying to learn on an empty stomach, a chronic challenge faced by children in Haiti.

Mother Rose has founded several Haitian NGOs, including The Good Samaritan Relief and Mercy Outreach Ministries
